What’s the difference between a powder & an extract?

A question I often get asked is what’s the difference between the Pat’s Apothecary powders (such as the 8-Shrooms Medicinal Mushroom Blend) and the extracts (the mushroom extracts in the jars: Chaga, Reishi, Cordyceps, Lions Mane and Immune Shrooms).

The 8-Shrooms is a 1:1 extract superfood powder (1kg whole mushrooms = 1kg mushroom powder). It contains the whole mushroom, including fibre from the cell wall, which has been broken down through steam sterilisation, making the active compounds more bioavailable.

The extracts in the jars are concentrated medicinal supplements, with much of the cell wall removed to concentrate the medicinally active compounds. I don’t list the exact concentration ratio of my extracts, as this doesn’t always correlate with the potency of the product or active compounds within (i.e., a quality 6:1 extract may be more potent than a well-marketed but inferior quality 10:1 extract).

Both are fantastic ways to enjoy the benefits of medicinal mushrooms!
